Hello,

Welcome to the Hosselkus Genealogy Site.  I hope you like the new look.  My name is Frank and I am the webmaster of this site.  If you have questions, comments, corrections, or additions, you can e-mail at hosselkus@yahoo.com and I will get back with you as soon as I can.  I accept all types of information along with all types of pictures.  E-mail me anything and I will use it how ever I can.  Biographies are nice too.  If you wish to write a biography about someone, I will put it on their page.  That way people years from now will know who they were.

Where does the name Hosselkus come from?

I have been told since I was a child that the name Hosselkus derived from Holland-Dutch. That is what I have passed along to those who have asked. I have contacted Genealogy firms in Germany, Bulgaria, and Holland. Most of which have never heard of the name, but a few had different varations of the same. In the records of the First Congregational Church of Portland, Connecticut, dated January 21, 1786, it shows a Hossenerniss described as a Dutchman, possibly a native of Holland or of Germany. As you see by the previous spelling, the name Hosselkus has had many different spellings over the years. A few in the church records and the 1800 and 1820 census records include Hosenkause, Hossenerniss, Hosencruse, Hasselkus(a popular name today), Hosekus, Hoselkus, Hoselenius, Hostelkus, Hoselkuse, Husselkus, Haslicus, Hosenkause, Hosselkuse, Hussbeus, Hauselkous, Hoseleus, and Hosselkus. Most of the first names and ages in the records create a timeline or flowing history so it is easy to see that the records are talking about the same people.

What does it mean?

I have spoken to many German's over the years and asked about the meaning. Several meanings were given to me. One is that the Hossel means "rabbit" and the kus means, "to kiss". Another is that the Hossel means to "hurry". Rabbit kiss or hurry and kiss. I am still going to keep looking for a meaning.

The Family Shield

The Shield or Crest shown to the right was taken from a shirt that was made for the family reunion in Creede, Colorado in 1992. I am unsure of its origin.
