Gordon Eugene Hosselkus (1927-2000) of Creede expired on July 1st. He was preceded in death by his father Fred, brother Harry J. “Corky”, and mother Irene.

Papa/Gord, as he was affectionately known by those closest to him, is survived by his wife Bertie Jane and their two children Gail Kroll (Denver), Kevin (North Platte, NE), two step brothers Edwin (Sequim, WA) and Frederick (St. Louis, MO). Papa’s four grandchildren are Heather, Brandon, Holly, and Kory. Gord served as a surrogate grandfather for Karly and all of his nieces and nephews.

Gordon, “Gordy” Colorado’s longest serving county commissioner, represented Mineral County and the county seat, Creede, for 40 years. Gordy recognized that growth and population expansion into Mineral County was inevitable and it was in the best interest of Mineral County and the people of Creede to plan for growth rather than to oppose the great influx of people that he envisioned and observed during his reign as Mineral County commissioner.

Gordy first worked for Mineral County when he was 14 years old where he worked on the county road crew raking rocks from the roads. This experience provided Gordy with the foundation necessary to become instrumental in numerous county improvements that serve Mineral County and the Creede community today.

Most noteworthy of the many projects Gordy was adamant about were: establishment and growth of the Mineral County Health clinic, expansion and improvement to the Mineral County airport, black topping the main road network serving Mineral County, replacement and widening of all Mineral County highway bridges, enlargement and modernization of Mineral County’s maintenance capabilities, and modernization and improvements in the city/county administrative buildings.

Other highlights of Gordon’s life included: serving as the past master for Masonic Lodge #94, he was an active member of the Elks lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, Creede’s volunteer fire department, and served as Post Commander of the local American Legion Post. Gordon served his country in the Marine Corp. near the end of World War II.

Gordon worked as an assayor for both Emperius and Homestake mining companies. Gordon work as a timber crew supervisor for Kolisch Lumber. He owned his own construction company and tried his hand at silver mining in the Monon Mine in Sunnyside. Gordon’s construction and mining experience served him well as he assisted the Creede community in the planning and fabrication of Creede’s Underground Mining Museum and Underground Fire House.

Gordon requested that those choosing to make contributions direct their contributions to the Mineral County Health clinic and/or the Mineral County Airport fund.
